Inside the Experience
Located in the heart of Clayton, Victoria, Modu offers an inviting gateway to authentic Northern Chinese cuisine, with a notable emphasis on Sichuan flavors. The restaurant’s carefully crafted menu presents a balance of bold spices and delicate tastes that appeal to both adventurous palates and those seeking comforting familiarity. Among the standout dishes, their signature fried rice has won over even the pickiest eaters, while the braised beef and pork belly paired with perfectly cooked noodles showcase the kitchen’s mastery of tender meats and rich broths.
What truly elevates the Modu experience is the harmonious blend of flavors—the spicy, numbing Sichuan pepper that spices up classics like Mapo Tofu, complemented by light, fragrant soups that refresh the palate. The sweet and sour pork impresses with its crispy batter and tender meat, demonstrating attention to texture as much as taste. Even the simpler sides, such as cucumber salad or fried mantou, contribute thoughtfully to the meal.

“ Food was good and taste balanced. My son who usually doesn't eat rice liked the signature fried rice and ate a lot of it. Fish in spicy sauce was also very good. The soup was also light and flavourful. Overall it was a good dining experience. We'll be back again to try the other dishes. ”
“ The food and vibe are okay, but service needs improvement. Space: Small, noisy, but has a authentic Chinese vibe. Food: Decent, nothing too special. Staff: Efficient and quick, but the attitude was poor. They slammed the dishes onto our table loudly and lacked a welcoming smile. ”
“ We took dad here for Father’s Day dinner this year. We’ve been here a couple of times for lunch and thought the food was quite nice. Overall, the food was nice if you enjoy the northern Chinese style flavours, especially Sichuan pepper, which was in a lot of the food we ordered. Unfortunately, the sichuan pepper was too much for the kids to handle. On the upside, the portions were quite generous. We had no problem with the service. It’s your typical Chinese restaurant service. ”
“ Got to eat here for second time. Ordered: fries barramundi with sweet &sour sauce fried garlic American ribs green beans with pork mince. fried chicken wings with salt and pepper Shanghai fried noodle with pork steamed rice. Ordering was via qr code, so easy to order without needing to speak to people. We came early so no need to book tables or wait, but it got busy as we ate, so definitely book if required. The barramundi was really delicious! Pieces were cut and fried very nicely. The sauce pairing was also amazing! All the dishes go very well with rice or noodles. A nice Chinese restaurant to go for dinner. ”
“ They are located close Mixue where the old breadtop store was. The place is quite bougie with the lighting and decor and i like that they have QR code ordering. I ordered noodles and cucumber salad with apple juice. I am happy to see the portion for the price paid and really loved the salad. The only thing I wish they did was to include more vegetarian/vegan options in the menu and amp up customer service. We had to tell 3 different staff to raise the temperature because it was freezing! ”
